How to Make Money as a Teenager: 12 Real Ways

PlaybookJuly 27, 2026

There are two kinds of "how to make money as a teenager" advice: unrealistic get-rich-quick stuff, and actually-doable ideas. This is the second kind — 12 real ways to earn, grouped from quick gigs to real businesses, plus how to level up.

Quick ways to make money

These start today and need almost nothing but effort:

  1. Babysitting — reliable and always in demand
  2. Lawn care & yard work — mowing, weeding, snow shoveling
  3. Pet sitting & dog walking — recurring income from regulars
  4. Tutoring — charge for a subject you're strong in
  5. Odd jobs & tasks — help neighbors with moving, cleaning, errands
  6. Reselling / flipping — buy low at thrift stores, sell higher online

Online ways to make money

If you're comfortable on a computer, these reach further:

  1. Content creation — build an audience around something you love
  2. Freelance skills — design, editing, or writing on gig platforms
  3. Digital products — sell templates, presets, or guides once, over and over
  4. Print-on-demand — custom designs with no inventory
  5. Website & app testing — get paid for honest feedback
  6. Social media for local businesses — many will pay a teen who "gets it"

Turn a side hustle into a real business

Most of these start as gigs — you trade time for money. The leap to a business happens when you stop selling your hours and start building something that earns without you: repeat customers, a product you make once and sell many times, or a system someone else can run. That's when income stops being capped by your calendar.

Know your numbers first

Before you scale anything, understand two things: what it costs you and what you charge. Use a margin calculator to see what you actually keep per sale, and a break-even calculator to know how many sales cover your costs. Money you don't measure tends to disappear.
